  • Extremely high heat transfer efficiency: The counter-flow design combined with the spiral grooved inner tube greatly enhances turbulence, disrupts the boundary layer, and results in a heat transfer coefficient far exceeding that of ordinary straight tubes.

  • Compact structure: The spiral coil or straight tube bundle design allows for a large heat exchange area within a limited space, making it ideal for modular, integrated heat pump unit designs.

  • The robust structure can cope with pressure fluctuations and thermal stresses during system start-up, shutdown, and operation.
  • Good oil return characteristics: For refrigerant systems, lubricating oil return is crucial. The smooth flow channels and optimal airflow velocity inside the coaxial heat exchanger facilitate the smooth return of lubricating oil to the compressor along with the refrigerant.
  • Relatively good freeze protection: Because the water flows in an annular space, which is relatively large, even if the water flow is unexpectedly reduced, the risk of freezing and cracking is lower than that of traditional plate heat exchangers or shell-and-tube heat exchangers with narrow flow channels, providing more safety buffer for the system.

Core Structure and Working Principle

Structure:

  • Outer Tube: Typically a large-diameter copper or stainless steel tube.
  • Inner Tube: One or more spirally grooved tubes (used to enhance turbulence and improve efficiency) are nested inside the outer tube, usually made of copper.
  • Refrigerant Flow Channel: In most designs, the refrigerant flows in the inner tube, while water flows in the annular space between the outer and inner tubes. This design provides a large contact area for the refrigerant, which is beneficial for phase change (evaporation or condensation).
  • End Connections: Precision end caps and distributors at both ends ensure that the two fluids are sealed, isolated, and evenly distributed.

 

Working Principle:

  • Heating Cycle: Low-temperature water (e.g., 12°C) from a water source flows in the shell side (outer tube). The low-temperature, low-pressure refrigerant in the system flows in the tube side (inner tube), absorbing heat from the water and evaporating into gas, completing the "endothermic" process.
  • Refrigeration Cycle: The process is reversed. The high-temperature, high-pressure gaseous refrigerant flows within the inner pipe, releasing heat to the cooler water source in the outer pipe, thus condensing into a liquid and completing the heat release process.
  • Counter-flow design: The two fluids typically flow in opposite directions, maximizing the temperature difference for heat transfer and achieving extremely high heat exchange efficiency.
