Introduction to Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger Fundamentals
A shell and tube heat exchanger (STHE) is one of the most common and versatile types of heat transfer equipment used across industries. Its fundamental design consists of a series of tubes (the tube bundle) enclosed within a cylindrical shell. One fluid flows through the tubes (the tube-side fluid), while another fluid flows over the tubes within the shell (the shell-side fluid). Heat is transferred from the hotter fluid to the cooler one through the tube walls.
Key Components:
Shell: The primary pressure vessel that contains the tube bundle and the shell-side fluid.
Tubes: The conduits for the tube-side fluid. They can vary in diameter, thickness, length, and material.
Tube Sheets: Thick plates into which the tubes are fixed, either by expansion, welding, or both, creating a barrier between the shell and tube sides.
Baffles: Plates placed inside the shell to direct the flow of the shell-side fluid across the tube bundle, increasing turbulence and heat transfer efficiency. They also support the tubes to prevent vibration.
Channel or Bonnet: The component attached to the tube sheet that distributes the tube-side fluid into the tubes.
Gaskets: Critical sealing elements placed between the shell, tube sheets, and channels to prevent fluid leakage and intermixing.
